Local Ice Skating Rinks?

Does anybody know of any local ice skating rinks besides NYC. Indoor / outdoor?

Well you could use the one in my back yard (Lake Hopatcong) but I would wait until it freezes over...

Is Lake Hopatcong ice thick enough for ICE SKATING today (Jan 3, 2009)?
Thanks all!

I don't think the ice is thick enough yet. At least I wouldn't attempt it......

I saw it was kinda frozen over in some areas today. But it wasn't really frozen yesterday. I don't know how thick it could be after one day. I'll go throw some rocks on it tomorrow and see.

There were people skating and fishing today, but i think it could use a few more days in the 20's.

I'm a big chicken when it comes to getting on the ice this early in the season. It amazes me when I see people on a lake when parts are still not frozen.

Does anyone know if there are public places to skate on the lake? My cove area seems to be slow to freeze.

I went and looked at the ice today too. I hit it with a 2 x 4 and it seemed solid but I could see the bottom of the lake at the edge. If I can see through the ice then its too thin for me. Call me a chicken too, but I am with starrbetty and would wait for a few more days in the 20's.

As far as public places... just walk to the lake.

Looks like some of the ice melted today......I wouldn't go on to it yet. I too have seen people out there but I wouldn't trust it.....you'll end up like George Bailey. I did see people at the south end of the lake, but there's also a lot less water down there since the drained it.

Its getting pretty cold again and is supposed to stay cold for awhile. Probably be ok to go out on the ice in a few days. I will watch for people out on the ice.

There were some ice fishermen out by Sister Island the other day, and I have been walking out there, not to the middle though.

I have seen people out on the lake today. I think it would be ok to go out, but I am not encouraging anyone. I took some pictures around Bertrand Island, the one is at the Yacht Club.

I don't think the ice is safe anymore. But a few sources say typically ice needs to be 4 inches thick to walk on. The following link gives good facts about ice from the Army Corp of Engineers.
